Whisby Summer Festival

Monday 7 to Saturday 12 August

NEW for 2017! Find great activities and events on offer all week in our summer festival ideal for all ages. In partnership with the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust, join us for our first week-long festival showcasing the many opportunities we have to offer from led walks to bushcraft, you’re bound to find something for you! Each day will have a theme offering you a wide range of activities ideal for all the family!

Each day there will be events held across the site at either the Natural World Centre, Education Centre or the ‘events field’ which is behind the warden’s office.

Tuesday 8 August – due to weather conditions, events in brown on this day will now take place on Wednesday 9 August

WHISBY BIG FAMILY PICNIC

Our events field will be open from 12.30pm so you can enjoy your picnic lunch then join in with the drop-in activities from 1.00pm until 2.30pm. storytelling, seed heads and crafty creations. Bring your own picnic, or why not treat yourself to our Picnic Box.

COMMUNITY WILD FLOWERS

Find out about the diversity of wildflowers found on the reserve and on the highways and byways of Lincolnshire with Mark Schofield.

CHAINSAW CARVING DEMOSTRATION – this event is unfortunately cancelled. We apologise for any inconvenience.

Watch as professional artist ‘Chainsaw Mick’ carves his way through a chunk of wood to make a beautiful carving.

PAPER KITE WORKSHOP

Join the artsNK team and make colourful drawings inspired by the natural surroundings of the nature reserve then create your own simple paper kite and – let it fly!

Wednesday 9 August

TAKE PART IN ART

Explore nature! The workshop starts with a short walk onto the Events Field to collect interesting items followed by creative art including printing and painting.

AGES: 5 – 10 years. Must be accompanied by an adult or guardian at all times.

TIME: 9.30am –11.30am     LOCATION: Register outside the Natural World Centre. Workshop takes place in the Cygnet Suite.

VINTAGE VEHICLE DISPLAY

We are pleased to have vehicles from the Pre-War Austin 7 Club joining us for the day. Proud and enthusiastic members of the group are at hand to answer questions

VINTAGE BUS SERVICE

In partnership with the Lincolnshire Vintage Vehicle Society. We are please to offer a FREE bus service to the Lincolnshire Road Transport Museum.

TIMES: Buses from Whisby will leave at 10.30am, 12noon & 2pm. Buses from the transport museum will leave at 11.30am, 1pm & 3pm

LOCATION: MOOR LANE TEMPORARY BUS STOP     PRICE: FREE Bus Service. Admission to the museum is £5 per adult – children go free!

NATURE WALK

In partnership with Walking For Health.

Thursday 10 August

POND DIPPING AND ANIMAL HANDLING

Join the LWT Education team to Pond dip into Thorpe Lake. Look and see what you can catch under their supervision. Then move into the Education Centre to handle a range of critters and animals.

TIME: 2 hour drop-in sessions of pond dipping and animal handling from 10.00am-4.00pm.

PRICE: £5 per child (prince includes one and one child only on the pond dipping platform)

LIFE IN THE LAKE

Find out about what the Environmental Agency are all about and how they protect the creatures that reside in the ponds and rivers in Lincolnshire.

TIME: 10.00-4.00pm     LOCATION: THE BARN     PRICE: FREE Drop-In

EVENING BAT WALK WITH MEAL

Join the Lincolnshire Bat Group for a meal and talk followed by a walk around the Reserve with Bat Detectors – see what you can see and hear. Please dress suitable for a walk in the reserve.

TIME: 7.30pm Meal followed by the talk and walk with detectors     LOCATION: THE CYGNET SUITE for the meal.

Friday 11 August

NK DISCOVERY DAY

Find out what local activities, groups and events are available in the North Kesteven district. Groups include LIVES, NK Outreach, artsNK and North Kesteven Health Walks. We’ll have some great activities for you to try on the day including a Climbing Wall, Archery, Arts and Crafts and performances by artsNK.

TIME: 10.00-4.00pm     LOCATION: THE CYGNET SUITE     PRICE: Free Entry some activities may carry a small fee

PLANTS FOR MEDICINAL USE

Join Debbie Lincoln as she takes you around the Nature Reserve to discover what has been used for medicinal purposes in the past and what we continue to utilise.

BIRDS OF PREY ENCOUNTER

A chance to meet ‘Bo’ the Great Grey Owl, ‘Manfred’ the Palm Nut Vulture and ‘Skye’ and ‘Lilly’ stunning barn owls. This is a static display.

WILDLIFE WATCH BUG HUNTING

Join our group for 5-12 year olds today to let your youngsters be inspired by nature. We’ll be exploring the Education Centre Grounds in search of mini beasts and bugs.

Working in Partnership with the Dog Adventure Centre to promote fun and safe interaction for families, dogs and nature. Come for advice – book your 15 minute free consultation to discuss training queries while you are here.
